The Sankofa Birth Project

The Sankofa Birth Project is a powerful initiative that bridges the gap between Africans in the Diaspora and Africans on the Continent. Rooted in cultural exchange and mutual empowerment, this project honors the ancestral wisdom of childbirth while fostering meaningful connections.

The Sankofa Birth Project provides Africans in the Diaspora the opportunity to immerse themselves in traditional birth practices passed down through generations of Ghanaian midwives and birth workers. Participants will gain valuable knowledge, experience cultural authenticity, and reconnect with the traditions that honor the miracle of life.

Participants from the Diaspora engage in hands-on learning with experienced Ghanaian birth workers, gaining insight into holistic, time-honored methods of care for mothers and newborns

.

In exchange, participants contribute essential items for babies and mothers, including clothing, diapers, and prenatal supplies. These donations directly support local families and help improve maternal and infant health.

To stimulate the local economy, we collaborate with artisans in Ghana to create handmade goods. These unique items are sold, with proceeds reinvested in the community and the growth of the project.

"Sankofa" is an Akan word that means “go back and fetch it.” It symbolizes the importance of learning from the past to create a better future. The Sankofa Birth Project embodies this ethos by reclaiming cultural wisdom, fostering unity, and building sustainable pathways for growth and development.

Be part of a transformative journey that celebrates heritage, uplifts communities, and strengthens bonds across the African world. Together, we can honor our shared legacy while creating a brighter future for mothers, babies, and artisans alike.
